Last night during supper The Dreamer pointed out that there is something dripping out of His Babyness's ear. So it was. Obviously, he has had another ear infection without giving us a sign that he is not feeling well. Today our doctor sent us to see an ear, nose and throat specialist so that all the mucus could be sucked out of the ear. The sucking machine makes a scary noise and the whole procedure is probably very uncomfortable. His Babyness decided that he doesn't like it. I have never heard this child making such noise! He screamed, kicked, and arched his back so that it took about an hour to get only a little bit of mucus out of his ear. We just couldn't hold him down! Were he just a few years older, we could explain to him that this happens to make him better. Unfortunately, at 2 y 10 months His Babyness has no real concept of suffering little evil to prevent big evil from happening in the future.
Finally, the doctor gave up and prescribed some antibiotic drops that we have to get into his ear. We were all sweaty, tired and felt like we had failed as parents. His Babyness is quite obedient for a two-year-old, but this time he was just so terribly scared ...
I remember myself from the same age, getting probably some vaccine shot. I was wearing a white blouse with tiny red dots. Funny, that one remembers such unimportant details. I remember being scared already when my mom took me to the doctor's office (when we entered the ears-nose-throat hospital building, where the doctor saw us, His Babyness said right away that he wanted to leave), also, I remember the terror of The Needle and The Unbearable Pain - and that I had no idea what I was being punished for. I just pray that His Babyness is not going to remember today's experience as The Worst Toddlerhood Memory (btw, mine is being beaten with a belt by my grandfather - he was not a nice man -, because he had to comb my hair and pulled it painfully, so I cried and asked for Granny). We tried to make it somewhat sweeter for him with letting him choose a toy in the supermarket. He loves farming trucks and this is good, because we do have a little sort-of farm here! Maybe he will work it properly one day!
Do you know any herbal stuff to strenghten his ears and to prevent any further ear inflammations? I am eating raw garlic myself for my flu-turned-into-bad-tonsillitis (also, WonderfulHusband has sore throat and my mother has got the flu - what a fun New Year's Eve we will have), but His Babyness is probably too young for raw garlic. We cannot keep stuffing him with antibiotics every time he gets sick, especially since he often gets sick without showing any symptoms or distress.

Can you find soem oregano oil? It is fabulous at getting rid of ear infections!
And sadly, if he keeps getting infections, he might have a dairy allergy.
Thanks Paula, I will search for oregano oil. Dairy allergy would be a catastrophe, because up to 50% of our diet consist of various dairy products and any alternatives are hard to find, very expensive or even more dangerous to us (here in Northern Europe, no-one should eat any soy products and although our food industry uses a lot of soy, we are always very careful to avoid it). Also, His Babyness loves dairy products more than any other food. :(
Oh my. Sadly, if he loves it that much, then I would be suspicious of that being the cause. Is it raw milk?
My baby cannot have cow milk, so while we wait for our goat to freshen again, we are feeding her bone broth.
I roast bones, and then add them to a pot of water and simmer them for 2 days.
Add salt and other herbs as your taste desires.
Your little one is young enough, that he will likely outgrow the allergy if he has it.
But it takes time, and avoiding it for awhile.
The oregano oil is number one in all natural parents cabinets for ear infections, here in the US.
It is wonderful stuff.
